If you want a remote job and you have no prior experience, remote customer service is the most reliable place to start. It's not glamorous, but it's real, it's remote from day one, and companies hire for it constantly — because they always need more people doing it.

The bar to entry is genuinely low. You need to be able to write clearly, stay calm when someone is frustrated, and learn a product quickly. That's it. No degree required. No previous job in the industry. Just those three things, demonstrated convincingly in your application.

Who actually hires remote customer service with no experience

5CA — fully remote, no offices at all, hires gaming and tech customer support agents globally. They're one of the best entry points in the industry because they've built their entire model around remote hiring and training from scratch.

Concentrix and Transcom — large outsourcers that hire in volume. The pay at entry level isn't always high, but they hire regularly, they train you, and the remote experience you build is real and transferable.

SaaS startups — any software company between 20 and 200 people that's growing fast will be hiring customer support. They can't afford experienced people for every role, and they need to move quickly. Look for companies that have recently raised funding — they're in hiring mode.

What the job actually involves

Most entry-level remote customer service roles involve handling inbound queries — people who have a problem with a product and need help fixing it. You'll work over email, live chat, or both. Phone support is less common in fully remote roles but does exist.

You'll use tools like Zendesk, Intercom, or Freshdesk. If you haven't used them before, they're straightforward — most companies provide training, and you can find free overviews online that take an afternoon to get through.

What pay to expect

Entry-level remote customer service roles typically pay between $12 and $18 per hour depending on the company, the market, and whether it's a specialist role (tech support pays more than general support). At established SaaS companies the range is higher — $20-25/hour isn't unusual for someone with even six months of experience.

The real value: 12-18 months in remote customer service and you have something more useful than the pay — you have documented remote work experience, product knowledge, and a clear path to customer success, operations, or account management roles that pay considerably more.

How to apply

Keep your application short and specific. Say which product or industry you're most interested in supporting, give one example that shows you can handle difficult conversations calmly, and make clear you're comfortable working independently. Three paragraphs. That's enough.

Apply to roles within 24-48 hours of them being posted. Remote customer service roles at good companies fill fast — if you're the 200th applicant, you're unlikely to get a look. Being in the first 20 makes a real difference.
